We had a long-stay patient on our unit who had a hernia that was causing a lot of pain - they had been seen previously by a surgeon and deemed unfit for surgery. Weeks later, Maria was down in the OR looking for a sling device to help alleviate the patient's hernia pain. She ended up running into a different surgeon who asked why she needed the sling. Maria explained the situation and advocated for the patient. The surgeon assessed the patient and surgery happened a few days later.
