This particular day was awful. We all had 7 patients and she had 7 and was split. Maria had this particular patient whose prognosis was very poor. Battling cancer and with many infections. This patient seemed depressed and defeated. Maria went out of her way to make this person feel better, she said, "Since I can't cure anything or make her feel better with medicine I want her to feel beautiful". Maria bought make up for her and she touched up her eyebrows, blush and some lipstick. When I walked in the room to cosign insulin that patient was smiling ear to ear. That is what nursing is all about. Not only taking care of the patient physically but also making her smile. That was one of the most touching things, I have ever experienced and their bond brought tears to my eyes.
