Through Maria's efforts, we have witnessed COVID patients improve and discharge home. Each week we enjoy the caring moments that are created for our patients during Sunshine Hour at our daily safety briefing.
Maria Gonzalez exemplifies the role of a nurse leader. Through her actions, she promotes an environment where staff feels engaged, empowered, and respected. This last year, as one of the assistant nurse managers on the designated COVID unit, Maria has helped with innovative ways to ensure patients stay connected with their loved ones. Whether through technology, such as using an iPad, or organizing family visits through a patient window, to help organize the "Sunshine Hour," a time where patients can go outside and enjoy some sunshine and heal. This program has been very effective, and patients are truly appreciative of being allowed to feel the warm sun, provide the ability to be out of a sterile hospital room, and to actually see their loved ones - even though they are 6 feet apart - it allows for the connection to occur. Through these efforts, we have witnessed COVID patients improve and discharge home. Each week we enjoy the caring moments that are created for our patients during Sunshine Hour at our daily safety briefing. This program was highlighted in our Newsline at the medical center and we are thinking of publishing this great innovation. In addition, Maria has led staff and patients to participate with elements in the Enhanced Recovery Medical (ERM) program to improve their health and provide another way for patients to see their loved ones from a safe physical distance. Maria continues to engage the team (a strong skill set she processes) to promote a caring and healing environment. Through her nurse leader rounding, Maria always has a story to share with our team regarding a caring and nurturing experience that has happened on our unit. Maria has a unique way of capturing each caring moment and sharing these moments with staff and leadership. Through these stories, Maria has helped inspire, motivate, and create a compassionate culture in Sacramento. Maria has nominated several nurses for The DAISY Award for their caring moments, innovative ideas, and their contribution to providing true compassionate care to each of our members. Maria is a true example of a compassionate Nurse Leader, as evident in how she role models, how she communicates, and how she articulates the elements of professionalism in nursing.
