Maria Mlinac, MSN, RN

We are writing this submission to express our extreme gratitude for nurse Maria’s above and beyond care of our beloved mother/grandmother Z. When a sudden, massive stroke landed Z in the Lake West ICU, Maria was a constant, calming force for the family in a time of such great uncertainty. Her compassion daily for not only Z but also her family was so touching. Z is from the Czech Republic, and Maria utilized her Slavic roots, which share many similarities with Czech culture, to provide additional encouragement and comfort to her. Maria shared with us that she recently lost her own mother and that Z reminded her of her. It was so evident from the kindness, compassion, and time she spent with Z (and her family) that she cared for her as if it were her own. She championed the small victories, advocated for her, and provided guidance and a listening ear as difficult decisions needed to be made. We will be forever grateful she was Z’s nurse during this time. If anyone is deserving of this award, it is Maria. Thank you.
