We do team nursing on our unit. One day, Maria was on my team and I got to witness the compassion she showed to one of our patients. This particular patient was homeless and was being discharged from the hospital. It was very cold outside this day and the patient did not have the proper attire. His jeans were cut on the bottom by hospital staff upon admission and his shoes did not have strings. Maria gave this patient her personal coat so he would not be cold when he left and helped him to tape the slits in his pants and also fix his shoes so they would stay on his feet. I believe the compassion she showed this man is what being a nurse is all about and it deserves to be recognized as I am honored to work with people like her.
