We were placed in a difficult scenario of having a critically ill patient in need of emergency surgery. Maria, a labor nurse by training, has stepped into the role of surgical tech to fill staff needs. Although quite competent "teching" deliveries and c-sections, I know she had not encountered a situation where there was a high likelihood of massive blood loss and a post-partum hysterectomy. Despite all this, Maria kept her calm. She was excellent in the field, never got rattled, and was always a great team player. Our patient did well. It takes a special nurse to step into difficult situations, and even a more special one to do despite being outside your comfort zone. Kudos friend!
