Nurses provide care—but Maria T, RN, transforms the patient experience.
I wanted to share that you have truly exceptional nurses on the pediatric oncology unit. Each nurse brings something unique, and it is clear that they all work incredibly hard to provide the best care possible.

Nurses provide care—but Maria T, RN, transforms the patient experience.

In moments filled with fear and vulnerability, she brings calm, clarity, and compassion. Maria has made an extraordinary impact on my son and our family during one of the most difficult times in our lives. Her clinical excellence is undeniable, but what sets her apart is the heart she brings to every interaction.

From the very beginning, Maria created a sense of safety and trust. She carefully explains every medication and consistently updates us on lab values, helping us understand not just what is happening, but why. When my son began vomiting blood, Maria calmly explained how it related to his bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy, and decreased platelets, bringing clarity and reassurance in a frightening moment.

During multidisciplinary bedside rounds, Maria’s presence is grounding. These conversations can be overwhelming, but with Maria there, my son feels safe, heard, and valued. She transforms clinical discussions into moments of reassurance and trust.

What truly makes Maria exceptional is the way she connects with him. She meets him where he is—with patience, kindness, and respect—building trust through every interaction.

One moment captures who Maria is as a nurse.

After my son vomited, his nasogastric tube became dislodged. He was frightened and refused reinsertion despite repeated encouragement from the care team. Maria approached him differently. She paused and asked what he was feeling. When he shared that the tube was uncomfortable, she listened and validated his concerns. She then advocated for a smaller tube and went above and beyond to locate one after receiving approval.

Because Maria took the time to listen and advocate, he agreed. That moment meant everything. Maria didn’t just complete a task—she gave my son a voice when he felt powerless. She turned fear into trust, something we will never forget.

Beyond her clinical care, Maria brings light into the room. After the NGT reinsertion, she brought a colorful donated sheet set to brighten his day—an act of kindness that meant more than words can express.

Maria didn’t just care for my son—she changed how he experienced one of the hardest moments of his life. That kind of impact is not just excellent nursing—it is extraordinary, and it deserves to be recognized.
