The compassion, empathy, and strength she showed that day helped me through the darkest moments and gave me hope that I would make it through that day and the days to come.
I didn't know what to expect when I arrived at the hospital on an early morning in February. At almost 20 weeks pregnant, I certainly didn't expect that I would be rushed from the ER to Labor and Delivery and told that I would soon be losing my baby girl early. My husband and I were devastated and frightened, but throughout the scariest and saddest day of my life, Mariah was there. She did all of the things a nurse is supposed to do. She made sure that I was safe and comfortable, educated me on all the things that were happening, and prepared me for what was to come. The compassion, empathy, and strength she showed that day helped me through the darkest moments and gave me hope that I would make it through that day and the days to come. She somehow knew exactly when I needed her to do or say something and knew when I needed space. She made sure that we got as much time as we needed with our baby girl and showed her the greatest respect. Mariah stayed with us right up until we walked out of the hospital, protecting me all the way, making sure we didn't have to walk past the nursery, and even standing in just the right place on the crowded elevator so that I didn't have to watch another mother carry her baby out. Mariah made sure that we didn't leave the hospital without something to remember our baby. She and the other nurses on the floor made bracelets with her name and took pictures and tiny footprints. These are some of my most cherished possessions. I cannot express how much I appreciate everything Mariah did for me that day. Being a nurse myself, I know that shifts can be hard, and difficult situations make them even harder. She somehow made the unbearable bearable, and I will be forever grateful.
