September 2020 Honoree
Mariah Summerall, BSN, RN
Mariah was recently caring for a patient who unfortunately was dying from lung cancer. The patient was struggling with end-of-life decisions and refusing to transition into Hospice care because he had a grandbaby due early in 2020. It was clear to Mariah that this was not going to be achievable for the patient. She reached out to our Labor and Delivery team and explained the situation and circumstances. Mariah asked if there was a possibility for someone to come to the unit to perform an ultrasound at the bedside so the patient could see his grandbaby. They were able to make this happen later that same day for the patient and his daughter. Mariah made a significant and heartfelt impact on this patient and family. The patient ultimately transitioned to hospice care and passed within a few days.
Thank you, Mariah, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
