Maricar went above and beyond to serve a patient having a mental health crisis in early labor. The patient was clearly mentally distressed and had fired her first nurse. Maricar was charge nurse that night, and instead of handing the patient off to a different nurse to change the assignment, Maricar selflessly took the patient on as her own in addition to her charge duties. She did this because she had already established rapport with the patient, and the patient’s mental health state was fragile. Throughout the night, Maricar treated the patient with dignity and respect, even though her needs were very high. Maricar facilitated a calm and safe environment for the birth of the patient’s baby. Maricar was deeply committed to meeting the patient's needs so that she could have the most positive birth experience available to her. Because of Maricar’s presence, this patient was able to have a birth that aligned with her needs while also de-escalating potential conflict between the patient and other providers. Maricar serves her patient so well that night while also looking out for the needs of every other provider on the floor. Maricar is a selfless provider to patients and is also very protective and supportive of her team. I hope she can be acknowledged for the hard work she did to give this patient a safe and positive birth experience.
