She asked us questions about who my mom was before she was sick, and truly cared about my mom as a person- a wife, mother, dental assistant, dog lover- not just another patient on a ventilator.
Marcy cared for my mother during the last week of her life. I cannot even begin to explain all of the reasons that Marcy deserves the DAISY Award. She stayed with my mom for hours when she first transferred to the MICU and helped to calm my mom with her gentle words and caring touch when my mom was frantically trying to breathe on the BiPAP. She was there when my mom was put on a ventilator, and although my mom was extremely sedated and unable to respond to any stimuli, she would explain all the care that she was providing to my mom before doing it. She asked us questions about who my mom was before she was sick, and truly cared about my mom as a person- a wife, mother, dental assistant, dog lover- not just another patient on a ventilator. Marcy paid attention to the little things, such as mouth care, hair washing, regular turning, etc. in addition to the life saving measures that she was providing.

Marcy made a point to stop in and say hi on the days when she was working but did not have my mom as a patient. She always offered hugs and words of encouragement to our family during the hardest times in our lives.

When it came time to say goodbye to Mom, Marcy offered to come into work on her day off to care for Mom as her last day and be with us/her during her honor walk and while she took her last breaths. Our family couldn’t have asked for a better nurse, advocate, and, might I say, friend, to care for Mom in her last hours. Thank you, Marcy, for everything you did for my mom and our family. We will not soon forget you!
