Not only did Marie provide exceptional support, but she also became the patient’s voice when they struggled to communicate effectively.
Marie recently went above and beyond in ensuring the safety and well-being of a patient who required assistance in finding sanctuary from harm in addition to mental health treatment.
Marie tirelessly made numerous phone calls and collaborated closely with case management to secure safe transportation and placement for the patient. She took the initiative to follow up and coordinate with various parties to ensure the patient would be able to retrieve their belongings, have a safe place to stay, and continue to receive appropriate care. Marie’s diligent efforts and persistence allowed the patient the opportunity to make an official police report and meet with SANE nurse in addition to her treatment in the ED.
Not only did Marie provide exceptional support, but she also became the patient’s voice when they struggled to communicate effectively. She assisted the patient in phone conversations and made sure their concerns were heard and addressed. Marie displayed compassion and a wealth of patience while caring for this patient.
In addition to her outstanding advocacy, Marie also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to patient dignity. When law enforcement officers incorrectly labeled the patient as psychotic, Mare was able to identify that the patient was not psychotic but neurodivergent with a speech impediment. Her actions showcased the importance of understanding and respecting individual differences.
After many hours of relentless work, Marie and the case management team were unable to get the patient outside placement or services. Instead of sending the patient back into a hostile environment, they kept her overnight and into the next day to provide a safe environment while waiting on women’s protective services and law enforcement to secure a safe environment post-discharge. Her dedication and compassion in caring for this patient truly embody the spirit of the DAISY Award.
