Ms. Lusis is to be recognized and commended for her outstanding assistance and teamwork with the integration of women's health into primary care and for providing outstanding care and compassion to women veterans. Ms. Lusis exemplifies all the I CARE principles and heart of the DAISY Award.
Commitment, Advocacy, and Excellence: I started the VAPSHCS AML Division with a panel of women veterans and designated the provider to start the integration of women's health into primary care at the facility. Ms. Lusis was excited and eager to join the VHA mission to provide further access and high-quality care to women veterans. Up to this point, Ms. Lusis had provided care to only male veterans. Ms. Lusis demonstrated a commitment to learning and providing exceptional care to women veterans. She immediately completed the required training and had all the documents ready for reference to assist with integration. Her dedication to educating and developing the knowledge required to be an essential part of the PACT team caring for women's health was noteworthy. She arrived in the clinic that required full set-ups for various aspects of women's health. Without any hesitation, she was eager, ready, and willing to do whatever it took to accomplish this mission. She collaborated with me to ensure correct supplies were ordered and was proactive in follow-up until all supplies were present. Ms. Lusis was committed and instrumental in getting all equipment for the clinic. She also worked with the clinical laboratory on establishing processes for lab supplies and guaranteeing that tests were sent accurately for processing. She self-initiated and set up exam room carts with all necessary equipment and supplies. Upon review, everything was present to make the women feel comfortable and confident about their care. Ms. Lusis went out of her way to make sure that everything was available and ready for women veterans. She truly is an advocate for women veterans' care and upholding excellent quality care. Integrity and Respect: Ms. Lusis demonstrates integrity and ensures respect for women veterans. Initially, there were not enough gowns available and there were some barriers to overcome. Ms. Lusis continued to advocate for this vital supply to respect privacy and provide quality care. She succeeded with adequate quantity for all exams throughout the clinic. Following exams and procedures, she ensured all feminine supplies were available for comfort in exam rooms. In addition, she confirms doors are secure, curtains closed, and assists in chaperoning all exams. For exams, she is extremely sensitive and compassionate during this vulnerable time. All of this may seem contrite yet has been essential for women to feel respected and comfortable in their transition to this new environment. Ms. Lusis demonstrates respect, integrity, and compassion welcoming all female-identified veterans which makes their experiences the best setting and practice.
The dedication, care, and compassion Ms. Lusis demonstrate are most importantly recognized by our women veterans. I receive endless compliments and thank you notes about Ms. Lusis' integrity, respect, outstanding care, compassion, and advocacy for their needs. One woman veteran writes about her appointment date, “…Anniversary dates of loved ones that have passed are very difficult. After talking to you and Marilyn, I felt so much Better!! I look forward to seeing you all in 6 months.”
