My mom was admitted for the infusion of CAR T Cell. Everything was going well until she started to vomit blood and had a decrease in VS. Marissa was our nurse on the second day. She was so happy, pleasant, and knowledgeable. When asked for miscellaneous things like hot packs, etc. it seemed like no bother. She never made us feel rushed or like an inconvenience.
As a nurse, I am quick to assess nurses and the care provided. I immediately felt safe leaving my mom in her care. When she became critical Marissa called the rapid response team and my mom was transferred to ICU. Quickly, the crew that she was working with put in an NG Tube, foley cath, IV, etc.
During this time, our oncologist told us CAR T is probably not an option anymore, and we need to sit down to discuss how we should go to prolong her life with her DX. My father and I were tearful outside the room and Marissa touched my shoulder and said, "I'm happy to sit with you and discuss anything that you want to talk about." She was so caring and empathetic.
We transferred my mom and 6 hours later she vomited over 3,000 cc's of more blood.
Anyhow, she has really made an impression on me and I want to say thank you City of Hope for such an amazing nurse! Marissa also included me in her plan of care as a nurse- respecting my questions and concerns.
