There was a patient on the neurology unit who came in for stroke-like symptoms. This later was determined to be cancer, unfortunately. Marissa was this patient's primary nurse throughout her stay, and they shared a great bond along with the patient's family. The patient had been in the hospital for a few weeks and she stated how much she missed sunshine and her dog. Marissa got a wheelchair and wheeled her to sit outside, where her family then surprised her with her dog from home. The patient and family cried tears of joy and were so thankful for this small act of kindness. She recently joined the Flex Choice Team and worked on another unit one day when this patient came back to visit. We were able to call Marissa to get her to come back and see that patient before she left. The utter happiness to see this patient walking and talking was something I will never forget. The patient asked to go for a walk just like old times, and Marissa took the time to walk and talk with her and her family. This to me was such a simple act of kindness and love, which showed compassion and provided a sense of comfort for the patient and family. This patient stated numerous times how without the fabulous care she received and Marissa's uplifting humor and support, that she was not sure how she would have kept her spirits lifted. Marissa made this patient feel normal and loved and in her time of weakness, helped her shave her head and helped her pick out a beautiful hat to wear that showed her personality.
Marissa is a strong nurse and a great critical thinker, and it was obvious that this patient always felt safe in her care. Her ability to build trusting relationships exemplifies her kind spirit and compassion for not only other staff members, but for her patients and their families as well.
