I have the pleasure of working with Margie in Labor and Delivery. While she is a very knowledgeable nurse it is her compassion that stands out. I get to witness this on a regular basis with her but there was one particular instance that I'm sure I will never forget, Margie was caring for a very young patient who was experiencing her first birth. The patient was very high maintenance with multiple co-morbidities and intolerable of her labor pain. As soon as Margie came on shift and took report of this patient she immediately went into the patient's room to comfort her and coach her through the pain. The anesthesiologist had already tried multiple times to get an epidural in the patient with no success on the prior shift. Margie insisted that we try again and asked the doctors to try with the patient lying on her side. While doing this the patient was distraught and Margie hugged and calmed the patient down. She was able to reassure the patient that everything was going to be okay and that she would be comfortable soon ultimately resulting in a successful epidural placement. She also spent extra time with that patient throughout the day educating her and easing her fears on the labor process. Margie didn't let the high maintenance issues of this patient interfere with her exemplary care. This is the kind of compassion that Margie shows every day!
