Mr. Mitchell promoted care that was truly patient-centered, which focused on the educational needs of a patient to understand the details of the St. Jude Pacemaker home monitoring device. 

The St. Jude home monitoring device is a wireless transmitter that allows the veteran’s implanted cardiac device to transmit data remotely without the veteran having to come on campus. It also allows for frequent monitoring of the veteran’s heart rhythm. 
 
As stated by the veteran on this nomination, “We were not even aware of this service until Mr. Mitchell informed us during our visit with him.  We were truly amazed as he went above and beyond with his explanations using graphs and even hand-drew an illustration of what my husband’s pacemaker was doing electronically.” Mr. Mitchell took his time to elaborate on how this monitoring device works.  The veteran and his spouse commented on the vast amount of knowledge shown by Mr. Mitchell and how he was an excellent instructor. Mr. Mitchell’s actions contributed to ensuring the veteran had a positive remote care experience, improved clinical outcomes, and increased patient engagement.
