We had a very ill and long stay patient suffering from AML. She was having daily transfusions and without the transfusions, she would not survive long. After a long and difficult battle, the patient decided to go with hospice against the family's protest. Once the decision was made to no longer suffer, the patient was very emotional and afraid. Not only did the family not agree with hospice, but they also left the patient here alone despite her pleas to not be left unaccompanied as she was afraid to die by herself.
Our case manager Marla did not want the patient to be abandoned during this difficult time. Marla refused to leave the patient's side and kept her company and distracted during this arduous and emotionally painful journey. Marla went above and beyond her duties as a case manager to show immense compassion for this patient and exemplifies the improvement of human life and what Southern Hills is all about.
