Under very trying circumstances where a patient assaulted and severely injured a staff, Marlena Buen, the charge nurse on the Behavioral Health Unit, exhibited exemplary leadership and compassion that all of us should strive to emulate.

Despite the chaos, Marlena in her level-headed, unflappable way, was able to coordinate the myriad of details to ensure that the patient and staff were safe, that emotional needs were met and the functioning of the Unit was maintained. Because of her stewardship, the Unit did not unravel, the remainder of the staff were able to attend to the patient's needs and that the families and leadership were kept informed of ongoing developments.

Marlena is the consummate professional who tirelessly devotes herself to her profession every day. I am not surprised at all that she was able to rise to these difficult circumstances and coordinate our efforts that horrible evening.
