Marlene went above and beyond in her care for a patient on her unit who was newly diagnosed with diabetes. He was unable to afford to buy a blood glucose monitor. Marlene was not assigned to this patient but heard him say that he did not have any money. She went down to the hospital pharmacy and bought the patient a glucometer. She did not want the patient to know that she bought the glucometer for him. When the patient was given the blood glucose monitor, he began to cry. He said he could not believe someone would do that for him. Marlene truly went above and beyond to help this patient. She is a wonderful example of an extraordinary, compassionate nurse.
