Recently my mother had a total knee replacement; she is elderly, fragile and struggled with pain, nausea and new onset confusion. When Marlene came on shift the first night she was quickly back in the room after rounds, doing a full and professional assessment. Small things like tubes indenting skin were moved, heels were floated, ice added and TED hose fixed so they weren't pressing on the wound. She listened to us and then acted, medications were adjusted and problems solved. Mom was resting quietly, calm and out of pain within an hour of her arrival. I was able to go home and sleep without worry. The next evening, Mom had a serious bout with atrial fibrillation but Marlene was right on it, working with the medical physicians they were able to monitor her closely and eventually converted her rhythm using medications. We are so appreciative of her knowledge, kindness and the obvious love she has for her patients and the nursing profession. Both Mom and Dad requested that I do something to make sure others know of her outstanding work ethic, we hope to see her honored with the DAISY Award.
