I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize one of your nurses, Marsha H Hosek, RN. In late January my team, Medicine 6, had a very critically ill patient in your unit on the 8th floor. He was admitted with complications of severe meningoencephalitis that progressed to coma, renal failure, hyponatremia, and pneumonia. He was unable to speak to or communicate with us, and even more worrisome, he was “posturing.” He belonged in the Medical ICU, but there were no beds available. Nurse Hosek stepped up to provide the state-of-the-art nursing intervention that I would have expected in an ICU, and the patient survived the night. Although still in a coma the following morning, he was able to lie flat and his neck was supple again. His blood pressure was up and his hyponatremia was resolving. NG tube was down and she’d crushed all his meds and antibiotics and made sure he got them on time. She gave excellent reports to us daily, contributing to the rounds. As the days went by the patient continued to improve. Of course, she wasn’t the only nurse to take a turn at his bedside, but I believe she coordinated his care, and the entire team of nurses pitched in and were part of the recovery after that initial bad night.
