As a doctor myself who has worked for many years in hospitals, as well as a patient, I have encountered countless outstanding bedside nurses. However, one nurse on the Rollins Pavilion at Emory University Hospital stands head and shoulders above all these nurses and her name is Marsha Wierson. What is it that makes Marsha so extraordinary? Marsha is incredibly maternal and very kind, thoughtful, unassuming, and humble. She goes out of her way to do anything to make my life as a patient easier. She goes out of her way to do anything to make my life as a patient easier. Just seeing her in the morning makes my day and assures me that I will not be isolated, that all my medical and emotional needs will be tended to, and that she will genuinely assist me in determining and meeting my daily goals. She does things to boost my spirits and encourages me to do the same, which is no easy feat during a lengthy admission when I feel sick. I truly welcome and appreciate Marsha's warm smile and the fact that she clearly thinks about me when she is not at work. I believe that she can connect with any patient regardless of their sociodemographics as she is respectful, compassionate, always has something nice to say about everyone, and finds a way to connect with each person about something important to them. It is evident that she has learned a great deal about the specifics of my health challenges and has the medical and nursing experience and expertise to use what she learns to help me improve and feel better. Marsha personifies the term "patient advocate"; on numerous occasions across many admissions she has gone to bat for me with the medical teams to ensure that I receive the highest quality of care possible in the most timely fashion. I am also grateful to Marsha for the ways in which she also prioritizes taking care of my family member, most importantly giving her a hug when I have had a very difficult night or day or collaborating with her as a care team member. My mom always knows that I am in the best hands when Marsha is my nurse. Marsha's compassion is infectious, and she consistently excels at identifying and meeting my needs and my family's needs in ways that go far beyond the traditional role of nursing. I am grateful to Marsha as a nurse and as a human being.
