I was admitted to Downey Hospital with severe abdominal pain. I underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction and other medical abdominal issues. After the surgery, I spent 15 days in the hospital on the DOU floor. Martha was my nurse for several of my days there. Martha went above and beyond in her care for me. I was very anxious and her calm nature made me feel so much better. She also communicated well with my family. When I was able to have food, Martha helped me communicate my food allergies/restrictions with the dieticians in the hospital. I know that is part of her job, but she really looked out for me because I couldn’t eat dairy or gluten. When I would be throwing up, she would rub my back. I was crying, she would remind me that I was going to be ok. When I told family and friends not to visit me, she encouraged me to have them come to see me. The doctors wanted me to get up and walk and Martha walked with me as much as I wanted. I will never forget the care that I received from her. Even though I had other nurses during my care, Martha was exceptional as a nurse and anyone who gets her will be extremely lucky.
