In early October of this year, I lost my mom after a long fight with cancer. During her final weeks, she stayed on the 10th floor of UK Hospital. She was expected to recover and be released from the hospital, but her condition deteriorated unexpectedly. This happened so fast that her poor condition prevented her from being moved onto the Hospice Floor. Although Hospice workers attended to her (and our) needs frequently, it was the attentive care of Nurse Martha Johnson that causes me to submit a nomination. My mom was a dedicated nurse at UK Hospital for over 35 years--she would be proud of the professionalism, attentive work-ethic, and most importantly, compassionate demeanor displayed by Martha. Martha cared for my mom as if she was her own mother. I simply could not ask for a better hospital experience during such a trying time.
Although I would commend and thank everyone at UK for their service to my mom and my family, Martha truly deserves extra recognition. Many days she would check on and care for my mom when she was either off shift or before coming on shift and working in a different area. This dedication to patient welfare, a truly compassionate spirit, epitomizes the UK Hospital that my mom dedicated her life-work to. I know this 'nurse's nurse' would be smiling down from Heaven at the recognition of Martha Johnson.
