Martha helped restore hope for our future and shed so much light on us during such a tragic time.
My husband and I found out we were pregnant a couple of months ago. We were absolutely ecstatic! We had our first appointment in June to see our baby for the first time. During the appointment, we learned that we were most likely in the beginning stages of a miscarriage. As you can imagine, we were completely heartbroken. The staff were all so kind. They walked us through what the next few days of testing looked like and planned to follow up a week later with the results.
Unfortunately, my labs confirmed our fears and we were told that we were miscarrying. A few days later, I went in for a D&C so the doctor could remove the remaining tissue. Martha was my nurse. All of the staff were so kind, but we weren't there to see happy faces. We were there to put an unexpected and tragic end to a pregnancy that had ended too soon.
Martha introduced herself and immediately told us how sorry she was that we were here and going through this procedure. It wasn't a typical unfelt apology, you could hear the sadness in her voice and see the hurt on her face as she sympathized with us. I believed her and thanked her for her kindness. We had to answer a lot of difficult questions on this day. She walked us through the procedure very carefully and thoroughly and repeated multiple things each time I had a question.
She spoke slowly and softly, making sure I understood everything she was saying. When it came time to decide what to do with the tissue remains, she walked us through each option and gave us more information than what was on the sheet given to me. I can't imagine how difficult it is to have to walk a grieving parent through the options on what to do with her unborn, dead child, but Martha was graceful, sympathetic, patient, and so unbelievably kind.
I have never had an experience like this. I have never had a nurse who changed a moment in my life like Martha did. I don't have the words to express the deep gratitude I feel when I think of how she helped me AND my husband on that awful day. I felt as though Martha grieved the loss of our child with us and held our hand throughout the entire process. She helped restore hope for our future and shed so much light on us during such a tragic time. Martha is one in a million, and I'm so thankful she was there for me on that dark day.
