Marty was my night nurse for several nights, some of my most emotionally difficult nights. The first night I was dealing with both a GI bleed and preparing for a colonoscopy. As if that in itself isn’t enough I am a rape/sexual abuse survivor, so emotionally preparing for a colonoscopy is very difficult for me. I can’t even begin to count how many times Marty had to clean me up from having a bowel movement in bed. What could have been a very humiliating night wasn’t because of Marty. He made me feel so at ease and was always right there because it was important to him that I not “sit in my own poop”. I never would have made it through that night so well with any other nurse. The kindness, compassion, and care he showed me that night specifically, I will never forget and I feel I can’t thank him enough. The dignity he showed me I am eternally grateful for.
