The situation: 16 year old boy with eminent brain death and failing physical vital signs. Neuro at bedside stating that all heroic efforts futile.

Martine Kernop stood in a room filled with MDs and advocated for preservation in the hope that many other patients could live. Martine and I have children around this same age, and it was very emotional for both of us.

I believe in my heart that only once in a lifetime you get the privilege to work with someone who possesses all the qualities that Martine has. She has pride, presence, partnership and over all, compassion for others.

My life is forever changed, as are many others who received organs from this very tragic event. Thank you, Martine for saving lives of those you never even knew. It took grave courage, tenderness and strength.

Martine is diligent, stellar, and a role-model to each and every one of us in the medical field. I want to personally thank you, Martine Kernop, for your unbelievable vigor and valor in the emergency department. Your compassion has touched my heart and you have my gratitude and respect.
