Mary has been a nurse on 4100 for over 20 years. I have only worked with her for about 5 years, but I have seen her be a calm and comforting figure for patients and families on a daily basis. She advocates for her patients whenever needed. She does what is right for her patients, every time. I've never seen her "pass the buck" to anyone. She stays late whenever needed to assure that her patients receive the best care. She is one of the most persistent nurses when she thinks something is wrong with one of her patients. I've seen her catch strokes, MIs, and septic patients before physicians believed her.
Recently a patient that was sent up from the ER with chest pain. The ER doctors and hospitalist thought it was related to acid reflux, but based on her assessment and the brief history she obtained she thought he was actively having an MI. She eventually got the orders she wanted and a cardiology consult. Once the cardiologist arrived he saw what Mary did and they rushed the patient to the cath lab. They ended up taking that patient to the CVICU. Mary makes time for her patients. Once she arrives to the floor for her shift, which is usually before any other nurse, she is completely focused on her patients. Most days I work with her, I rarely see her because she spends all her "free time" with her patients. Patients and families love when she is assigned to them. I know that patients that are assigned to her get the best possible care. Many nurses and techs make comments as to how thorough and attentive she is to her patients and their families. Mary has been giving top nursing care on 4100 for years and is a true DAISY Nurse.
