Mary notified the surgeon and got orders for STAT labs and later on had the patient admitted for observation when able.
Mary has been with Newton for many years and is always pleasant, kind, and caring. Her patients and staff love her. She is always willing to help and is a team player. Here is my extraordinary nurse story regarding Mary...

It was a normal day for same day surgery, admitting and discharging patients. We had an add on to the schedule from the ER. A younger gentleman who needed a hernia repair that was very painful. The patient preoperatively was with his significant other and was very nervous. We did our best to put their minds at ease. It was his first surgery ever. We prepared him for his procedure, and they were very grateful for the care that received. The patient went for his procedure which was uneventful. The patient came out from the OR and Mary was his nurse. He finished his PACU recovery and made his way to second stage recovery. The patient was sweating profusely on arrival. We wiped his brow and gave a wet washcloth to his head. The patient still continued to profusely sweat and started to look uncomfortable. We let his significant other visit with him for a few minutes and Mary thought it was best to return him to the PACU. The patient returned to PACU, and Mary looked through the chart to see if there were any answers there. Mary found that the patient had an elevated lactic acid in the ED. Mary notified the surgeon and got orders for STAT labs and later on had the patient admitted for observation when able. Repeat labs had shown an increase in lactic acid and with Mary's due diligence, identified the problem and the patient received the proper treatment. Mary put the patient and significant other at ease. The patient was later discharged home.
