Our mom was so happy when she knew that this nurse would be her nurse for the day. She was so personable and made us feel that she really cared about our mom.
Our family would like to begin by saying what excellent care our mom received from all of the staff on the 4th and 5th floors at the West Shore Hospital on two separate admissions in July 2024. Although all of the nurses were great, we formed an extra special bond with one nurse. This nurse showed integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence each time that she interacted with one of our family members and most importantly with our mom. This nurse advocated for our mom so many times to get her the medications that she needed to keep her comfortable after a major surgery. She listened to all of our concerns and checked in with her manager and the doctors every time we requested a consultation. This nurse was not only reactive, as we understand that can happen to even the best nurses with so many patients during a shift, but she was often proactive with her care, going above and beyond for our mom. She explained to us (and to our mom) all the medications and treatments as she was caring for her. She showed our mom the utmost respect as our mom was struggling at times with her throat and feeling nauseous so often. Our mom was so happy when she knew that this nurse would be her nurse for the day. She was so personable and made us feel that she really cared about our mom. This was especially comforting when we would go home for the night. We believe that this nurse should be awarded the DAISY Award, and we thank the family of Patrick Barnes for establishing this foundation to recognize Extraordinary Nurses like Mary Bittmann.
