This calm, professional manner cannot be taught; it is inherent in a nurse who knows how to connect with her patients.
My husband had a significant bleed stemming from a colonoscopy which occurred one day post procedure. It resulted in a 3 day stay in ICU.

He presented to the emergency room via ambulance. This was a very stressful situation! Though they tell you this could occur as a result of the procedure, you never think it will happen to you.

He was re-scoped to control the bleeding in Special Procedures. Mary was his nurse during the whole episode. Mary explained what was going to happen every step of the way. She had a calm, reassuring presence, which put my husband and myself at ease. This calm, professional manner cannot be taught; it is inherent in a nurse who knows how to connect with her patients.

Through my positive interaction with Mary, I thought this was a special hospital. I could work here. I applied for my position and am very happy I made the decision to come to York Hospital. I have since shared this with Mary, that she is the reason I came to York Hospital!

When I reflect on the DAISY Award and what the honor means, I truly think Mary is deserving. She represents what the foundation of nursing is built upon: the art of science and caring.
