By going the extra mile, Mary was able to put this patient and his daughter at ease and give them an opportunity to speak that would have otherwise not been possible
It’s not often that our OR nurses have the time to make a meaningful connection with our patient’s family members. They usually only meet briefly in pre-op during the hustle and bustle of trying to get into the OR safely and on time. I witnessed Mary make a meaningful connection with the daughter of an anxious surgery patient on the phone. Mary received a phone call at the OR desk from a woman who was very anxious and very concerned about the approaching surgery her elderly father was about to have and she was unable to be at the hospital with him. She stated her husband had just passed away and the thought of her father’s health being in jeopardy was almost too much to handle. Mary began to talk to her and assure her that her father was in good hands. Mary then gave the woman her personal cell phone number and explained that she would walk to our pre-op area and call her back so she would be able to speak to her father before he went into the OR. By going the extra mile, Mary was able to put this patient and his daughter at ease and give them an opportunity to speak that would have otherwise not been possible. Thank you Mary!
