Mary’s most impactful moments for me came at times when our organization was hours away from having to divert all of our dialysis patients to other out-of-the-area facilities due to COVID and other illnesses taking out our regular dialysis crew.
It is with great appreciation that I submit this DAISY Award nomination for Mary Coddington. Mary started her career at Wayne County Hospital in August 1993. With over 29 years of service, Mary has served in many departments including Med/Surg, OB, ER, Dialysis, and Same Day Surgery. Mary has excelled at every role that she has assumed. Her love for learning and teaching has proven invaluable to our organization over and over.

The care that she provides for our patients is above and beyond with each and every encounter, as evidenced by her patient survey comments. In every setting, Mary is faithful to greeting patients and staff with a pleasant and calming disposition, even in the tensest situations. Her skills in the ER and her rapport with staff and providers are a cornerstone for the weekend crew. Mary also excels as the Charge Nurse in med/surg. She is kind, and very supportive of everyone on her team. Her assignments are strategic and fair. She is calm under pressure and she helps everyone to get through even the most hectic of days. She is faithful to using shortfalls as teaching moments.

At the end of the day, the patients have all received high-quality, compassionate care. Mary managed the dialysis department for a number of years. She was known for her constant kind and caring personality to the patients and staff. The relationships that she built with the staff and patients during her tenure still remain strong today. Mary’s most impactful moments for me came at times when our organization was hours away from having to divert all of our dialysis patients to other out-of-the-area facilities due to COVID and other illnesses taking out our regular dialysis crew. Mary stepped forward and canceled her PTO and other plans to avoid a shutdown. She did this not only for our organization but for the patients! You see, these weren’t just patients to her. They were people that she genuinely cared about. People that she had built relationships with. She knew that some of those patients would likely not be able to make the trip to other facilities and would likely skip dialysis altogether, putting their health at risk. Simply said, this is the Nurse that I want caring for my family! If not her, then one that mirrors everything that she stands for.
