When my wife and I were visiting the ER, I was in a great deal of pain and was very frustrated with the Physician on duty. Mary saw my frustration and showed empathy while ensuring I was as comfortable as possible. With a 20-plus year history of leg and knee problems, the Physician was looking for reasons “not” to treat me. It is now three days after my ER visit, and my knee is swollen up to the size of a large grapefruit. Clearly, there is something wrong that I feel the doctor completely ignored. I am not writing to discredit the doctor. I am trying to illustrate the situation. This wonderful nurse checked on me often, advised me of what was going on behind the scenes, and stayed after her shift ended to finalize my care and get me discharged. Mary made sure I was comfortable, and her calm and professional demeanor kept me from getting angry with the doctor. Nurses need to wear many hats as they deal with patients who are not at their best. Nurse Mary Dennis deserves the whole garden!
