During my week at HUMC, I knew when Mary was on shift I didn’t have to worry.
I am sending this email to nominate Nurse Mary Farrell who took exceptional care of me last week. I have, unfortunately, been a patient at Hackensack Hospital several times due to frequent GI complications because I have progressive Lupus.
I was transferred from Observation to being admitted to Conklin, where Nurse Mary took care of me for several nights. This was the longest I had been hospitalized through my years as a patient of HUMC. I have had many “good” nurses, plenty in my family, & my cousin is a L&D nurse at HUMC. However, I’ve never had a nurse that made me feel so completely cared for. I have been used to having to page for my nurse when I was due for my next dose of medications, yet Mary took it upon herself to set an alarm on her phone for when my next dose was due. She would always enter my room right on time with my medications & I never had to wait in pain for an extra half an hour for someone to find my nurse. She always made sure I had everything I needed even it was getting an extra blanket and pillow. I had so much trouble sleeping from the pain I was in, but one night I finally fell asleep. She came in to give me my medications and left a note on my table letting me know she’d been in, what she gave me, the time, and that she would be back later to check on me. I have never had a nurse go so above and beyond in their care for a patient.
During my week at HUMC, I knew when Mary was on shift I didn’t have to worry. I truly cannot express in words how much it meant to me to have a nurse that was kind enough to set her own phone alarms for my doses, would leave a note because I was asleep, and always came into my room with a genuine smile. I have tears in my eyes recounting what the acts of one nurse can do for a patient like me. We are in a time where we as patients we cannot have visitors, and it can be quite scary being in the hospital in pain.
