Mary compassionately recognized the emotional vulnerability of the second patient and included the hospital chaplain at the bedside to assist.
Mary is a CNP working full-time in Preop/PACU as a staff RN. Her clinical knowledge is exceptional, and she delivers laser-focused care every day. Mary embodies each core value of Mount Carmel Health System, but she excels in Reverence, Justice, Commitment to the Poor, and Integrity. This was never more evident than on one particular day.
Mary was caring for an 80-year-old female post-op patient who was struggling to breathe and ultimately required transfer to a higher level of care. Mary remained calm while tirelessly working with anesthesia, gen med, the nursing team, and the chaplain to assure her patient was examined and properly cared for. She was consistent in providing care to the whole person, verses a (shoulder), including the family in her explanation of events and treatment. She could utilize the observations made within the family dynamics that reassured the patient and then employed those same methods when the family was absent.
During this time, Mary received a second patient who, although physically and hemodynamically stable, was extremely (poor in Spirit) emotionally. Mary maintained a very calm presence with both patients, despite the rising anxiety of the second patient whenever Mary needed to care for her first patient. As this second patient increased in her anxiety, Mary compassionately recognized the emotional vulnerability of the second patient and included the hospital chaplain at the bedside to assist. Mary also demonstrated the self-awareness to process the events of the day for her own soul thereby increasing her ability to come in on her next shift able to care for those patients as well.
