For the past 30+ years, I have had the opportunity to work with many school nurses. For the past 3 years, I have had the pleasure of supervising one of the finest school nurses in the business. A school nurse has many daily duties; they dispense medication, conduct countless department of education required screenings, care for students who are not feeling well, provide guidance on proper nutrition, attend meetings, ensure immunizations records are up to date, and a variety of other duties. Mary Irwin completes all of these duties and finds time each day to visit classrooms, walk the hallway, eat lunch with students, etc. She goes out of her way to find opportunities to interact with EVERY student in an effort to make sure they are staying focused on the positive. Nurse Irwin goes above and beyond the requirements of a school nurse. She cares for each student's academic achievement and emotional growth. Nurse Irwin has an impact on the Hampton Academy students beyond school because she teaches them to care about not just themselves but others. She has made a meaningful difference in the care of hundreds of students in need of positive daily guidance and support.
