Mary lets me completely take the reigns on my projects but knows exactly when to step in if she sees something going off course or if I need help.  This is empowering but supportive, which is a very important characteristic of a leader.
Mary is the Nurse Director for the Diabetes Research Center.  Mary has been a Nurse at MGH for almost 50 years.  I am compiling thoughts from multiple staff members that the Diabetes Research Center to include in Mary's nomination letter.

Mary takes the time to meet with all of the staff here at the DRC.  These "check-in" meetings are often in person.  It gives each of us time to discuss any ongoing issues, and also receive feedback in real time.

I have worked with Mary at the DRC for just short of 2 years but have worked as a nurse at MGH since 1994, and I would describe Mary as the best nurse leader I have ever worked for.

Mary is always approachable, even when I can see that she is very busy.  She attends meetings across multiple studies and always offers a helpful suggestion, constructive feedback, or a new perspective.  She values each person's opinion, regardless of role, and encourages us all to feel confident expressing our points of view.

A colleague writes, "I have had the privilege of learning about being a leader from Mary when I had a job transition about 6 months ago.  Despite how busy she is, Mary is always available to discuss how things are going and how to handle situations as they arise.  Mary is always available to answer questions, even before or after work hours". She adds, "I really admire her leadership style. She lets me completely take the reigns on my projects but knows exactly when to step in if she sees something going off course or if I need help.  This is empowering but supportive, which is a very important characteristic of a leader."

According to another staff member, "She will retire soon with her legacy being the DRC and all that she has done for the Diabetes community directly, but also what she has done for those that have worked with her.  She is a class act that I look up to as a woman in medicine, research, and leadership.  I am honored to have worked with such an amazing individual, and I don't know of anyone more deserving of this award than her.”

Mary's relationship with our study participants is also one to admire.  The participants from one of her studies consider her family.  They have known Mary for 40 years during their participation in a long-term Type 1 Diabetes study.   Staff members here at the DRC are excited for Mary as she plans her retirement, but her unwavering support will surely be missed.  I look forward to the year ahead as I continually learn from Mary about my new role as a Research Nurse.  I have joined her long-term study, and I certainly realize that I have big shoes to fill!

It is almost impossible to convey in words how Mary deserves this award.  She is recognized both nationally and internationally as an expert in Clinical Research Nursing, but for us here at the DRC, she is the glue that holds us all together and the force that inspires all of us each and every day.
