Mary is a phenomenal nurse, leader, and role model to all, and maintains professionalism at all times, even in challenging, emotional situations. Mary forms close bonds with her patients and their loved ones, going above and beyond in many instances, from helping mobilize her intubated patients, to getting them up to the chair, to completing range of motion, to combing their hair and offering a shave. Some simple, some very complex tasks, all done in the pursuit of giving the best possible care and dignifying her patients, however she can. Mary represents the best of interdisciplinary collaboration. In one specific recent instance, Mary coordinated a visit from the children of a long-term patient whom we had grown close to. It was an extremely special moment and provided the patient with profound strength and encouragement to persevere through the prolonged, tumultuous recovery process. Every day she is on the unit, Mary models grace, humility, and compassion.
