This is a little late recognition due to my personal difficulties dealing with the event of my mother's death. However, in retrospect of my mother's hospitalization and care at NCH, I want to devote this time to recognize a unique nurse; Mary Marconi. My mother was admitted with a broken hip. She had dementia and I was her surrogate decision maker. I am also a doctorate degree nurse and teaching professor. I spent day and night in the hospital with my mother to help her anxiety and behavior as she responded best to me. After a series of unfortunate events the third night, my mom suffered a stroke and went into SVT, and was transferred to 4N, under the care of Mary. Mary demonstrated compassion as she introduced herself by holding my mother's hand and calling her by name. She worked together with her tech as a team, gently and compassionately, they turned my mom every two hours, and Mary assessed her and communicated findings to me. Mary showed compassion for my mother and my family members. The next night Mary was working, I felt comfortable to go home to get some rest. Her presence on duty gave me the comfort and trust that my mother was in good hands. My mom was transferred to hospice and died soon after. Mary is the extraordinary nurse I could only hope for as my own someday.
