Not being physically able to do hardly anything for me, Shelley stepped in and did everything for me and my sister as she was there with me. She explained things to me, came to check on me every hour or so and most importantly she listened.
Being a patient of Shelley's was probably the best experience I had during my stay. As an indirect coworker of hers at UCM, I know her ethic when it comes to taking care of patients. I found myself having surgery in October, landing on her unit post-op. I was excited and asked for her and she came to let me know she was heading home and that she would check on me as she would be back in a few days. My routine procedure took a turn for the worse and I needed a second surgery, making me be in the hospital for about a week and a half, resulting in me having her as my nurse when she returned. Not being physically able to do hardly anything for me, she stepped in and did everything for me and my sister as she was there with me. She explained things to me, came to check on me every hour or so and most importantly she listened. I always had a full report of what was going on and why they were doing something or giving me medication. Every day she was jolly, happy smiling, and joking around, not just to me but to other people. A lot of people would say, "well that is her job". But little did we know on my surgery date, Shelley had her own health issues. While I was depending on her to help ambulate me, clean and bathe me, make sure that I was OK and recovering, she was healing, too. To think the week or so that she was my nurse, she never once had a frown. That courage and dedication to not only her patients but to UCM are unmatched. But here she is every day being a pillar and coming to work to care for someone else's loved one. I think this is not only above and beyond her call, but also an extraordinary heroic act. She doesn't really live close to UCM, so for her to drive over an hour and a half to perform like this under her own personal issues is by far a strength and a story of not only an exemplary employee but a role model for people in the same situation. With having a strong, dedicated nurse such as herself there is no doubt that this kind of person is the reason UCM is Magnet status. I think her unselfish dedication amidst her own storm deserves some kind of recognition. To know that I had this kind of person caring for me has made me smile even more. It speaks volumes of her caring spirit.
