Mary Pointer joined Piedmont Northside initially as an emergency room nurse in 2019. Then in 2021, she wanted to try something new and applied to be the vascular access nurse. This department was new and had little to no structure outlined, but that didn’t scare her. Mary jumped into this new role feet first. Mary learned all about being a PICC nurse by shadowing at Piedmont Midtown. She completed 20 insertions to complete her competencies and brought what she learned back to PCN. She created a standard workflow and fostered relationships that made this new department successful. Mary spent countless hours educating nurses, helping the novice nurses become more proficient. She also spent time educating the MDs on the CLABSI promise package to keep line utilization down. This was not always an easy job. Once a small department, averaging 600 lines placed annually (1.2 lines per day), it has now grown to over 2100 lines placed every year. Year after year, Mary has maintained a zero-harm record and continues to receive patient nominations for her superb bedside manner. Mary lives the Piedmont Values, and we appreciate her leadership dearly.
