In June, I delivered a 24 week and 3 day baby via emergency C-Section/hysterectomy. I was in-tubed, sedated, and my hands were tired (literally). My husband split his time between the CCU, where I was recovering, and the NICU where our baby was being assessed and cared for. My memory was very foggy from my anesthesia and I generally panicked wondering about my baby's status every time I woke up.
Between the pain and uncertainty, I was immensely anxious. Mary was my nurse in the CCU and at the time, Mary was about to provide expert care that helped both me and my husband through this situation. Even before I was extubated, she remained in contact with my husband to ensure I had the latest news regarding my newborn. She never got tired of repeating herself while I struggled with my memory. She held the paper for me while I wrote questions as she knew clear communication would help me tremendously.
Mary also has a very rare and helpful ability to maintain that utmost professionalism while appropriately using humor to ease anxiety. That's something that cannot be taught in nursing school. From simple, but ever-so-important gestures, such as offering to help me write when I could not speak, to explaining why it was important to be weaned off the medication I was given post-surgery. Mary performed at an exceptional level.
Her care and expertise were absolutely vital in helping me to recover enough to meet my baby for the first time on the second day. I have actually spent additional time in CCU and it was very obvious when Mary is not working because her energy is missed. Her personality and expertise created an environment for me that was conducive to recovery. She is an asset to Texas Children's and I believe she would raise the quality of care anywhere she decided to work. Thank you, Mary!
