I arrived at the ICU to be with my sister who was in critical condition from cancer. My sister, C, and I asked Mary to explain C's situation to us. Mary took us into the lounge in the ICU. With quiet compassion, she sat with us to help us understand the severity of her condition, in a calm and caring way we could understand. She also explained some of the stages of grief and worked with us to help support C's husband through the tough decisions that had to be made.
Mary must have very clearly communicated C's rapidly deteriorating health to the doctor because the doctor drove from Portage to see C late in the afternoon the day before C's death.
Mary's calm, caring, straightforward manner gave us such comfort at a very difficult time. She is truly an angel and deserving of the DAISY Award.
