Mary Tackney delivered compassionate care every day, and although his outcome was poor, his experience was not bad because of the great care and her intuitive nature of knowing what he needed before he knew himself, and the emotional and social support she provided.
My brother died the end of last year from cancer. He had been an in patient in Cavan Hospital for two to three months during his illness. Unfortunately, from the time he discovered he had cancer it was only 3 months until he was dead.
What I wish to talk about is the wonderful compassionate care he got from the nursing staff on the ward where he was the longest a patient, that being Medical 1.
They're a great team of nurses, and although they are run off their feet, they have a very happy working environment. You can see the respect among staff members, they're professional and have a lovely caring attitude.
I believe this comes from the top down and that their manager Mary is a most exceptional nurse.
My brother's care was looked after primarily by his family. It was facilitated by the staff on the ward, who allowed them to visit and maintain their dignity by allowing his family to help him so much.

He confided that he struggled to talk with his family about his illness, but Mary supported him in communicating and explained everything very clearly.
Visiting was restricted at the time but Mary and her team allowed us free visiting, we were so grateful as these were the last weeks of his life.
A fact none of us were aware that Mary kept him updated on his condition and made suggestions to make his life more comfortable, advised him about settling his affairs and to perhaps to look to go home while he was still able. That is something we will be forever grateful for.
I wish to commend Mary for her compassion, patience, and sensitivity during this difficult time. She truly is a DAISY Nurse.
