Before dinner, Mary had managed to engage the patient so fully that she no longer needed to be physically restrained.
Mary is very deserving of the DAISY Award for her outstanding work in clinical. Every day, Mary comes to clinical with a smile and enthusiasm to learn. Her joyous and positive attitude is infectious. She seeks out any opportunities to learn and develops a great rapport with her patients. She is not afraid to work with challenging patients. One Thursday, there was a patient on the unit who was in acute psychosis. The entire clinical day, she was screaming and combative, eventually having to be placed in 4-point restraints. The next day, Mary jumped at the opportunity to care for this patient. She entered the room with confidence, began engaging the patient with music, and had her dancing and singing in no time. Before dinner, Mary had managed to engage the patient so fully that she no longer needed to be physically restrained. There was no yelling or distress the entire shift. The charge nurse commended Mary’s efforts to me and said she was so impressed by her ability to engage with this patient—she was also appreciative of having a peaceful shift. Mary is kind, caring, and passionate about nursing. She is a delight to work with, and I’ve enjoyed watching her grow during this rotation. She is very deserving of the DAISY Award and an exceptional example of the SON’s core values.
