Mary Wells portrays nursing service excellence in the labor and delivery unit. She is a highly skilled, compassionate, sound critical thinker, collaborator and consistently displays the highest ethical standards of any nurse. She serves as the ultimate patient advocate. Mary has a unique ability to see beyond the initial snapshot. She is widely held in the highest respect for her professional practice and collaboration across all disciplines. She is well respected and equally devoted to nursing at Texas Health of Plano.
With her grace and generosity, Mary took upon herself to take care for not only a pregnant patient, who had a life changing event, but also a husband whose prognosis was not more than 5 days. By collaborating with ICU and Labor & Delivery managers, we arranged the labor and delivery room to accommodate both beds that consisted of the pregnant wife and her dying husband. The husband’s one wish before he passed was to see the birth of his baby. The wife took that wish and planned to induce her labor.
With the example noted, Mary was devoted to be part of their experience and provided her utmost compassionate care during the emotional time. Mary’s compassionate care lead and helped a pregnant mother deal with the aspects and emotions of finding out that her husband did not have long to live. She was dedicated and committed to true patient advocacy, delivering personalized care to not only the patient but the dying husband as well. She provided focus, cohesiveness and consistency to the patient needs. She portrayed professionalism, excellent critical thinking and decision making skills that made a difference in the life of the patient and the husband. In meeting the family’s needs, Mary provided excellent emotional support that made the patient feel special and extraordinary on the day she delivered the baby.
On day 5, as expected, the husband passed, Mary revisited her patient after delivery to the see the new baby and provide condolences and emotional support to the wife, due to the loss of her husband. She is a true representation of how much of an impact a nurse can make on one’s life, one’s death, and one’s family. She is truly an inspiration to the labor and delivery unit.
