When Maryann heard about C, she was there within minutes, and she never left our side.
This nomination is coming from a bit of a different angle. Maryann did not take care of us as a patient on her L&D unit this time, though she has done so in the past. She delivered both of our boys, C & C. This time, she cared for us in a different way. She cared for us on a deeply emotional level. Our son C came into Sacred Heart in critical condition. He was placed in the CICU. When Maryann heard about C, she was there within minutes, and she never left our side. She helped us understand what was happening and what was coming next at every turn. Maryann was next to us when we received the worst news of our lives. She was there to ensure we had the necessary support and to be sure we understood what we were being told, which was that our son was gone. She is an incredibly strong, caring, and compassionate woman. She stayed strong when we could not. I don’t know anyone else who would have done what she did for us. Not only did Maryann support us during our darkest days, but she was also there for her fellow colleagues. As nurses and healthcare workers, I cannot imagine the emotional toll this job takes on an individual. We witnessed firsthand the support she gave her colleagues. She was often seen talking through tough moments, getting them something to drink, offering moments of prayer, and providing many other types of support that often go overlooked. They say it takes a village, and Maryann defines the village.
