Marybel Gonzalez demonstrates quality, commitment, and compassion with each and every one of her patients. On one occasion, while rounding with her to see if she needed help, I observed her go into an isolation room. I followed her, and asked if she needed help. She explained to me that the patient was at the end of life and actively dying, with no family in Yuma. Marybel was in there to place eye drops in the patient's eyes in order to help with dryness. Marybel explained that the patient did not like the eye drops. At this time, the patient no longer expressed herself or was able to communicate. Marybel leaned over to the patient and held her hand, telling the patient, "(name), I am here with you, you are not alone". I then helped Marybel reposition the patient. Throughout this encounter Marybel held the patient's hand and then followed to stroke the patient's forehead to comfort, each and every time telling the patient, "I am here with you, you are not alone".
Prior to leaving, she moistened a mouth swab and swabbed her mouth to help with the dryness and bloody lips she had. She wiped the patient's mouth, leaned over her, placed the call light under her palm and told the patient, "I am here, call if you need anything". My heart was moved; Marybel demonstrated altruistic compassion for this patient at the end of life as if the patient was alert and oriented.
